Killiney Beach properties evacuation order still in place

Central Okanagan, B.C. – The Evacuation Order for the 12 Killiney Beach area properties remains in place at this time. The majority of the properties are vacation homes and vacant. Two individuals were displaced yesterday and accommodated in a hotel.

Residents and the public are asked to continue to stay away from the area due to hazards related to the unstable slope.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) is conducting work on site. Residents in the Killiney Beach area with questions or concerns about drainage can contact the MOTI Kelowna Office at 250-712-3660.

An Evacuation Order was issued on Saturday evening (April 28) for the safety of residents and properties downhill from a slope that was unstable. A landslide on Westside Road North in the Killiney Beach area caused by groundwater and saturation was significant enough for the slope to fail.

Several local government flood prevention and mitigation measures are underway throughout the Central Okanagan. All property owners living near creeks and streams in the Central Okanagan, especially those who have historically experienced flooding, are responsible for protecting their buildings, structures and properties from groundwater and potential flood damage. This includes protective measures for storm drains in underground parkades.

Self-serve sand and sandbags are available to help residents with their flood prevention preparations. The 15 sand and sandbag locations in the Central Okanagan can be found at cordemergency.ca/map.

The Central Okanagan Emergency Operations Centre will provide an update to media on the current conditions in the Killiney Beach area tomorrow afternoon, Monday, April 30.
